Afellay: "I'm very happy to be playing again"

Ibrahim Afellay returned to competitive football after seven and a half months on Barça’s injury list. This Sunday he played 20 minutes against Rayo Vallecano.

The Dutch player’s last official match with the team was the Barça-Osasuna game played on September 17th.

Afellay: “I really like to play football. I’ve worked hard during the team’s training session and I’m very pleased”.

His last minutes played in the Barça strip were at the Camp Nou during the 8-0 thrashing of Osasuna, and today, he did his part in another Barça exhibition (7-0). After a long time on Barça’s injury list, Ibrahim Afellay returned to competitive football today against Rayo Vallecano.“I really like to play football. I’ve worked hard during the team’s training session and I’m very pleased,” said the Dutch footballer, who also said that he’s been looking forward to this moment with a lot of enthusiasm: “you know the moment will come someday but you don’t know when. I’m happy to return.”

Afellay, therefore, has left behind the ACL injury that he picked up on September 22nd during training. On October 3rd he underwent surgery to mend the torn ligament and he started his long road to recovery the following day. On April 11th, after six months of work and rehabilitation, he was given medical clearance to play and this Sunday he stepped out onto the pitch to help his teammates claim another victory.

Afellay was subbed in for Sergio Busquets on 72 minutes, with 0-4 on the scoreboard. In the 20 minutes he was on the pitch he participated in 10 collective plays and was involved in 21 overall plays. However, beyond the numbers, this Sunday will be remembered as the day of his return. The Dutch player hadn’t played in an official game since the Barça-Osasuna match on September 17th. He played 24 minutes that game.

"We won't change”

Afellay also talked about Guardiola’s decision to leave the Club at the end of the season: “Guardiola is one of the best managers in the world but Tito is almost the same. They’ve worked together all these years. I believe everything will be the same.” The Dutch player, who spoke to the press in Spanish, said “I hope to speak to you in Catalan next year.” (via FCBarcelona.com)

The best and the worst of Rayo-Barça

Barça thrashed the Lightning in Vallecas. Discover the best and the worst of the match of Guardiola.

BEST: The Return of Afellay. Barça recovered in Vallecas the Dutch player who had injured since last September. A reinforcement of good insurance can provide new options in attack for the final of the Copa

WORST: The lack of sensitivity of Thiago and Alves to the rival. The midfielder scored the fifth goal of Barça and celebrated with a dance with the Brazilian. A gesture that could be misinterpreted by the home crowd and that the captain, Carles Puyol, happened to stop immediately. (via SPORT)

[Liga BBVA; Week36] Rayo Vallecano 0 - 7 FC Barcelona

Goals from Messi (2), Alexis, Keita, Pedro (2) and Thiago gave Barça a record win at Vallecas in a game they totally dominated.

Further good news for the team was the return of Ibrahim Afellay after his long injury layoff.

The game proved to be the perfect opportunity to react positively following the disappointments against Madrid and Chelsea as the team swept Rayo aside with a demonstration of attacking brilliance which saw them three up at the break. Goals from Messi (2), Alexis, Keita, Pedro(2) and Thiago gave Guardiola’s team a comfortable win which beat their previous best result at Vallecas(1-4 in the 1989-90 season)in their first visit to this ground in the last nine years.

The result was another demonstration of the team’s character, bouncing back from a difficult week with painful defeats and the announcement of Guardiola’s farewell with a seven goal show that keeps them seven points off the leaders.

It was pretty clear from the start that we were in for a game full of goals, with Messi opening his account by rounding off a good team move and then winning the ball in midfield to set up Alexis for the second. To add, literally, injury to insult, Rayo defender Rober banged into the post in the goal and was stretchered off.

Rayo were playing a high line and Barça were happy to take advantage, looking for the runs of Alexis and Pedro in behind and after laying siege to Cobeño’s area, it was really no surprise when they went three up through a Keita goal – once again set up by Messi to deservedly send them three up at the break.

There was no change in the second half, with Messi firing an early chance from an Alexis cross at the bar and the ball falling to Pedro who simply had to knock it back in to make it four. Ahead of his probable game in the Cup Final, Pinto got a rare start and made a number of classy stops, whilst Afellay came on for Busquets on 73 minutes to make a welcome return after his long injury layoff, which has seen him miss most of the season.

Barça then got three more in the last quarter of an hour, as Thiago headed in a great cross from Alves for the fifth and Pedro got his second after more great work from Messi, who rounded off the rout with his second on 90 minutes. It was a great performance from the Argentinean, who is now just two short of Gerd Muller’s record of goals in a season, and indeed from the whole team who were once again at their very best ! Pichichi, Zamora and other challenges for Barça in this Liga

Messi try to snatch CR7 the title goalscorer, Valdés will seek his fifth trophy and Guardiola, extend their incredible records.

With the title almost impossible, the incentives for grabs at this sprint final four league games will focus on decorating the winners of some players and raise the bar even higher number of stage of Pep.

Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo maintained an amazing and productive pulse by the scorer, while Víctor Valdés with his gloves caresses his fourth consecutive Zamora but Iker Casillas tries to stop him. Today, Rayo tests the Catalans records.

Leo longs to regain the kingship for being top scorer in the league managed to 2009-2010 (34 goals) that CR7 snatched last year beating (42) the record of goals (38). The azulgrana is a crack (41) and continues to battle.

Real Madrid was a halt a run of 10 straight games scoring that earned him a booty of 18 goals. In the same portion of time, Cristiano had 13 goals.

The persecution of Leo has been arduous. In Week 23, just at the setback against Osasuna, the Portuguese established a major difference with four goals. Leo not only equaled but even exceeded it twice.

Valdés is a few stops to be the first goalkeeper to achieve the Zamora Trophy in four consecutive issues and to catch the legendary Ramallets, until now the historical reference to five.

The azulgrana has conceded 26 goals in 34 games, an average of 0.76, far from the top of Liaño (0.47). Casillas posted 30 and their average rises to 0.88. Heads-up still exciting.

Pep has a super-duper catalog records, and may even extend his reign. It's 3 goals of the 100 in this league, but his world record is 105 in the 2008-2009 campaign and 5 of 400 in four years.

It is also close to matching the number of games to zero in a season. They are 29 and the limit is 31 in the 2009-2010. And that is the legacy number at this stage is to startle many: 224 of 242 matches and scoring 114 without conceding a goal of 148. Almost nothing. (via MD)

Rayo-Barça: plays to make la Liga long to Madrid

Barça has a very precise on a trip to Vallecas newspaper put the spotlight on the first photos of Tito as a successor to Pep.

The displacement of Barça to Madrid today, where they will play late in the day closing Vallecas offers two fronts maximum media attention and the other football one.

When the official expedition arrives at Barcelona airport cameras capture for the first time the face, gestures and movements of Tito Vilanova, so far mate and essential partner Guardiola outside the journalistic focus, a figure that went unnoticed in the usual images of departures and arrivals to hotels and airports.

From now on will be different, especially on this trip to Madrid where his presence and participation, but will be forever, acquire a special screening.

Also Pep Guardiola, who shall vacate the office to Tito in late May so you can finally take control, will be observed during these last four weeks at the helm, so full of symbolism itself. Not for nothing is the best coach in the history of the Barça, leaving behind a style and personal dynamics.

The players will not lack reasons for leaving with the highest vocation of victory against the Lightning. For Pep, to dedicate a League final at the level of professionalism and character of Tito because after all these parties already have such assessment for the next season and because it is, and agrees that all FC Barcelona, to make the longest possible la Liga to Real Madrid, even more so if in the morning than at Sevilla at the Bernabeu.

In strictly sport, Barça has already lost la Liga after the setback at the Camp Nou last Saturday against Real Madrid, but it seems that the respective deletions in the Champions League, neither will play the final, has not cooled the rivalry but on the contrary, seems to have stimulated to give this end of the season an unexpected approach.

If Barça had been classified Vallecas would have gone to a lot of people's branch. It's different now, avoid touching white alirón best prepare Cup final 25-M. This has not been finished yet. (via MD)

Barça to other challenges in Vallecas

Although the league is lost except white catastrophe, Barça still has several incentives for those who continue to struggle this season.

Barça close the day league to beginning at 21:30 to the Ray de José Ramón Sandoval, in a game that, after the defeat against Real Madrid last week, has no a priori much incentive.

However, the team has reason to keep stepping on the accelerator: the four remaining league games still must serve to prepare the cup final next month. Second, the team has to spend a good end of season Pep Guardiola, who will leave technical his beloved club after four years he has reinvented football and achieved countless titles.

At the individual level, there are two players who can keep building records, cases of Messi and Valdés. The Argentine, who added 41 points in the league this season, choose the top scorer while goalkeeper can match Ramallets if he wins his fourth 'Zamora' followed.

Messi also has a greater challenge. The '10 'has scored 63 goals in all competitions and is only four of 67 of those who scored at the time Gerd Müller with Bayern Munich in the season 1972-1973. Five games that can make even bigger. (via SPORT)

"Rayo will not pay any broken plate tomorrow, but Rayo have to play their competition, which is to save the category. What you have to do is compete and Rayo put it hard as he did with Real Madrid and Atlético, two teams of the greatest difficulties that happened here, "he said.

"Vallecas is different and will play against eleven or twelve thousand fans who will lead the team in a twinkling. We have to go to football concepts and try to beat the Barcelona game. I want the players to see that this is saving us category, "he said.

"I think Rayo has a philosophy and style of play themselves. We are playing eleven to eleven, although it is true that they have such quality that any minimum error is going to penalize us. Hope you do not have the successful day and I my team to compete. This game can be one that gives the glory, "he said.

"I hope the same Barcelona that league, because sometimes you have to applaud them, and not take it off or by hand. We will take a small step to risk as always, we have to play our game and not because it is the Barcelona intimidate. We are at home and is the ideal time to put the icing on the season, "he said.

The Barcelona arrive tomorrow to Vallecas the withdrawal of the injured Xavi Hernández player who Sandoval scored one of the four best in the world. "Barcelona have enough players to replace Xavi. For me it is within the top four in the world. Barca have players for that role, and you leave the bench to be unbalanced. What we have to do is not let think the player who plays in his position, because if anything, is Barcelona through excellence, "he said. (via SPORT)
