Roman's Vision. Hope or Reality?

Roman Abramovich has finally achieved his goal of winning the Champions League, the trophy has he lusted and coveted over for almost a decade has finally come to Stamford Bridge. The continual exits from semi finals, the John Terry slip in Moscow; it all just seemed destined to never come for the Russian. Yet, it seems destiny would look down on Chelsea and in the most unexpected circumstances, from a season which seemed to be Chelsea’s worst under Abramovich, turned out to be their best. And still, he was not overly impressed with the triumph. In Abramovich’s eyes success should be followed by adulation, not just from ones own fans but by the footballing world.

One cannot deny that Barcelona and their way of playing has captivated fans for the past four years and that even in failure they are lauded for their style. Cryuff has said that it is better to lose playing football the right way than win the way Chelsea did. I presume that Abramovich took those comments to heart.

Chelsea are a great example of the difficulties and dangers of modern management. In today’s game the pressure and expectation on managers is unrealistic, it is not possible for every team to win the league yet every managers remit is to achieve that goal, for some knowing that failure means their head. Chelsea’s philosophy of immediate success or fired under Abramovich has actually being quite successful, take this year as a good example. Villas-Boas would not have brought home the FA Cup and Champions League and their belief in changing the manager has disrupted the growth and evolution of the side yet has continued the winning of trophies. For Abramovich this is his goal, to be successful. However, by removing managers continually, Chelsea have not been able to evolve their squad and especially have not been able to implement the style which Roman seeks so badly.

The new Barcelona?

The Russian’s intentions at Chelsea appear to be nothing but a way of spending his billions, I am sure his love for the club has grown yet his intention is to make this side the most highly regarded in the world. Really it could really have been any side, yet Chelsea appealed; based in London, available and just qualified for the Champions League made this club the most suitable option. Chelsea fans should be grateful for the investment he has made too, the past decade being one of success which fans of Chelsea would never have previously experienced. And yet, trophy after trophy something was always wrong, no matter how many titles or FA Cups the side was winning, Roman was not happy. Quite simply, he wanted to see Chelsea play a style of Barcelona, the Dutch style of total football. He wanted to be entertained, yet importantly, wanted people to talk of Chelsea in a positive way, the way people laud Barca.

It is just not that simple though and this is the problem Chelsea have encountered time and again. The managers he brings in are talented and successful, mainly because they are realists and pragmatists who know how to win with the players they have. The players bought by Mourinho were winners and were bought because they would provide Chelsea with the attributes necessary for success. It was not about style for Jose, it never has been, his reputation comes from winning things. And this is what has been the problem between managers since and Abramovich. He wants to see total football, yet the managers know this is not possible with the players at hand.

Di Matteo will not keep his job this year because although he was successful and has brought the first European crown to Chelsea, he received plaudits for a mix of a defensive style and luck. People like Cryuff dismissed the win because of the nature of the how they played, an egotist like Abramovich would have been hurt by this criticism. However, this dangerous idelology of Abramovich almost destroyed the club this season; Andre Villas-Boas was hired in ordered to play the style he desired, yet results and the ultimate backlash meant Villas-Boas lost his job. Many have blamed AVB for this and it seems he made some wrong decisions, yet he was going on the remit from the owner of having to play a certain way and implementing it immediately. Any good coach will know this is just not plausible and he paid the price, the team went back to the style which has been so beneficial and they won things which AVB would and could not have delivered. This history is important when you consider the future of Chelsea now. New players are being bought and a new manager is being sought.

A new total football era?

With the departure of Drogba, Chelsea are losing their most influential and inspirational leader, perhaps even more so than Terry. His strength, power, determination and ability to score goals has ripped apart defences for the past eight seasons at Stamford Bridge. He has terrified Wenger and even Guardiola because of what he is capable of doing. Now he is gone and with his departure and the ageing Terry and Lampard, it would appear that a new era is blossoming at Stamford Bridge. To end their bond together with the win in Munich was fitting for this trio, AVB tried too soon to move them on and perhaps if he had perservered and waited to act this summer, he may have kept his job.

With the arrivals of Hazard, Hulk and Marin, Chelsea are clearly a new look side. Do not forget also that players like Courtouis, Luiz, Ramires, Romeu, De Bryune, Mata, Lukaku, Torres and Sturridge have all been bought in the past three years to build a squad for the future. There was no questioning that Chelsea were not an ageing side, yet there were questions about the new generations quality and importantly potential to play the way Roman craves. With Hazard and Hulk Chelsea have real talent in the XI for next season, their skill and creativity will provide many goals and scare many defences. Chelsea appear to be more prepared than even United for the future. Yet the question remains, the key one, who will be managing this group of potential? Can they play the way Roman wishes and importantly for how long?

Is Pep the right man for Stamford Bridge?

T
he man Roman wants the most is Pep Guardiola, every club in the world does for obvious reasons. Yet there are serious issues to consider in terms of his suitability for the role. Firstly, the obvious obstacle is his wish to take time out from football and the pressures of the game. I do not think money is the issue, I bet Barca offered to make him the highest paid manager in the world, yet his mind was made up, as he said, the belt was getting too tight around his waist and he needed to take it off. Why he would go to Chelsea so soon seems baffling then; he would be leaving arguably the world’s best side (for me they peaked in 2010/11) for a side which offers riches yet does not offer the equivalent of Barca. I really don’t think any money would persuade him, especially now.

Let us presume he is interested, surely the Chelsea job is one of the most difficult in world football today. If Pep arrived the expectations for playing total football would be expected from day one. At Barca he had a group of players developed in the culture of that style, nurtured through the club system in all things Barcelona. Guardiola brought them together, took them further in their style and put together one of the best sides I have witnessed. Chelsea don’t have this, their club style has been defensive, it has relied on strength and power over technical skill and guile. It is very difficult to change this, even if the new batch of players appear more suited to this style. Barcelona consisted of a group of players who played together since they were kids, at Chelsea this new group have not played together, they do not know each others ways, movements, unlike Xavi and Iniesta, they do not have an apparent telepathic sense. It will take years to develop this, time which Roman does not afford a new man.

The new arrivals Hazard and Hulk also too go against the way of Pep. My impression of Hazard in particular has being considerably negative in recent months; his behaviour, lack of respect to Lille and an arrogance of announcing his next side are actions which do not reflect the Barca way that Guardiola preaches by. Barca’s players arrive in Ford Fiestas, they are humble to their fans, they do not rub their wealth in peoples faces, they do not put on showcases on Twitter. They instead showcase their skills on the pitch not showcasing their arrogance off it. The attitude of Barca and their players shows why they are the best, shows their willingness to improve and learn. I question whether some of Chelsea’s new stars have this ability and this makes me wonder why Guardiola would find the role appealing.

Ultimately a key factor in why I question how good Pep could be for Chelsea comes down to his desire to succeed at the club. When you listen to him talk about the team he had at Barca he talks like a fan, he tells his players to entertain the fans and he has enjoyed watching them like the rest. His unconditional love for the club, from the academy to captaining the side to then managing it, is all about Barcelona. He loves that club and put everything into the role. Will he have this same desire at Chelsea, this passion? I question how effective Pep can be at another club for this reason. Can he deliver total football and success to Stamford Bridge immediately? I doubt it. It is one or the other until patience is given to developing this style over the next decade. I doubt if Roman has this patience.

Period of transition and patience

The period of transition at Chelsea appears to be happening quicker than expected, the side will look different come the first game of the season from the one which won in Munich. It is exciting times ahead for the club, the old era consisting of the Mourinho group are gradual being replaced. A lot of money is being spent in order for Roman to have his wish of beautiful football at Stamford Bridge. I worry though that this will not bring positive results, more AVB’s will happen and Guardiola should be wary of this role.

Roman will always seek a successful manager who has achieved things while playing a good way, he has failed with AVB and bringing Guardiola seems more hopeful than possible, so who can lead this new era at Stamford Bridge? There are two managers who could do the job; Rafa Benitez will be a name touted and he could do a good job with the side, yet is his style attractive enough? And Didier Deschamps is a manager who I believe could be great for Chelsea; with history at the club he likes to play attacking football, yet his relations with owners is not always positive, either of these two can command the respect of the players and bring the new generation through.

It will be difficult for any manager though, Chelsea change managers more than any other English side and a season without success usually means a P45. Is it possible though to bring total football and combine it with success? No, not overnight and this is why the Chelsea's cycle will continue to circulate and Roman will always find his hope for total football a vision more than a reality unless he changes his approach and becomes more patient in the coming years. It will be a fascinating summer ahead for Chelsea fans, yet I wonder what we will be saying about it this time next year.

Is There A Right Way To Play?

Surely the winner of the trophy deserves their name on the trophy? Yet it appears that “purists” of the game believe that the manner and style in which the trophy was won has placed a shadow over the winners. This is quite ludicrous, if they won then they deserved to? Yet for the fans who love to watch the “beautiful game” then perhaps it was not pretty, yet for those have a knowledge and understanding of the game, perhaps they will be more complimentary to Chelsea.

In the wake of Chelsea’s highly impressive and yet somewhat surprising victory in the Champions League, it has led to many fans and pundits accusing Chelsea of not deserving the trophy.

Chelsea’s tactical decision to defend in numbers and to stifle the space and time for players like Messi was a correct decision in hindsight. If Barcelona had beaten them then people would have questioned their tactics, yet this is the same for every game; tactics are regarded as good when successful and bad when not.

For Chelsea there was a certain pragmatism of how they could play against Barcelona, Bayern and even Benfica if they had any need to qualify. They did not have the personnel to implement on open brand of football, something which Villas-Boas learnt the hard way, simply this style was not applicable to the current squad. Chelsea admitted their vulnerabilities and used their strengths to counter that. Di Matteo went back to the method which had suited Chelsea so well for many seasons, with a mentality which was instilled from the "Special One" many years ago. Defend deep and compact and counter attack with fast wingers and the power of a strong number nine. The side which won the Champions League was Jose’s, it always has been.

Only one way to play?

Johann Cryuff has spoken out about Chelsea's success; he believes it was better to not have the trophy than win it the way Chelsea did. "Only Chelsea fans will be happy with this, for the rest, nobody can be happy with the outcome" Cruyff said to De Telegraaf."What especially bothers me is that a football team can forget everything and still win. I'd choose to take the steps we take at Ajax, towards the football that we all want to see," Cruyff stated.

Now this interesting and shows the arrogance of Cryuff and those who prophesise about “totalfootball” and playing the game the “right way”.  The thing is, there is no “right way”, for some there is an ideal of how to play, yet football is open for interpretation. In the senior game, there is only one thing that really matters, the result. The means in how you get there is not recorded in the history books, you either win or lose. Is Cryuff serious when he believes that it is better not to win if you play defensive football? This is a ludicrous mentality. If your chosen tactic is not working then a good coach will change it to suit the game and attempt to improve their sides performance. It says it all about Cryuff however that his “dream team” lost 4-0 to Milan in 1994; his reluctance to change things cost Barca the game. This stubbornness effectively ended Cryuff’s reign and prevented that side from going on to achieve more.

The need for a gameplan

Yet Cryuff arguing against a style is one thing, at least you can respect his opinion, however I have heard Arsenal & United fans in particular being distinctly harsh on this triumph. It sounds very much of jealously. United & Arsenal have both been beaten in the finals by the beautiful, total football of Barcelona. Do their fans wish that their managers had conjured a plan to beat a superior side? How they did they play against them? Did they have a tactic? A “blueprint” like Chelsea?

It was interesting last season in the build up to the final between United and Barcelona when Ferguson stated that he had a “plan” to beat Barca, that he had learnt his lesson from the previous final and that this time would be different. Well he was right, Barca were even better than last time and United, Rooney excepted, were abject and clearly clueless in how to deal with this side. When Ferguson spoke of his masterplan last year I expected something similar to the formation used by Inter and Chelsea.

Tactically United were awful, playing without a defensive midfielder again, whereas many sides now deploy two. United sat back quite deep, yet they allowed too much space between the defensive and midfield unit. With the movements Messi makes, surely Ferguson’s “plan” should have been to close off space centrally? Why a 4-2-3-1 formation was not used was baffling; and the threats came from those pockets of space. This showed to me that Ferguson and his assistant Phelan, were not tactically good enough to beat a side of Barcelona’s class.

He often talks of the United way of playing, that they play attacking football. Yet I didn’t see anything in that final which was impressive, which justified his tactics and style; careless in possession, panicked under pressure and tactically inept. Is this what Cryuff means when he believes it is better to play this way and get nowhere? In the final you choose a style that gives you the best chance of winning, United did not show this last season. No wonder United fans are jealous of Chelsea, when will be the next time United get close to the Champions League final? I assure you that City will be there before them.

Attacking football is only half of it

The same can be said for Wenger, who has failed for many seasons to overcome Barcelona, especially at the Camp Nou. This idealistic belief that by playing open, attacking football means that you can be content with failure is a preposterous mentality. As a manager you set out your side, especially away from home or against superior opposition, to be compact, organised and ultimately defensively sound. Arsenal in particular will never win anything while they have a tactically inept manager in charge who disregards the defensive side of the game because he sees it as being negative. This lack of understanding is why Arsenal have not won anything for seven years.

What Wenger forgets about totalfootball is that it is a defensive tactic first of all; the key is that as unit you press high to win the ball closer to the goal. It does not mean, in possession play nice triangles yet when the ball lost just wait to get it back. Arsenal are one of the most disorganised and poorly coached defensive sides in the Champions League. And Arsenal, in 2006 the were winning 1-0 against Barcelona and were even down to 10 men, yet they continued to play their style, somewhat believing that defending is an admission of guilt and that attacking football is what the game is about. This naivety has been the reason Arsenal have not won a trophy for seven years and their manager hides his tactical ineptness with a philosophy of attacking football. The key to any successful side is being strong defensively. Arsenal are one of the worst at this art.  No wonder both sets of fans were jealous, because they witnessed a side who showed that strong defences can win trophies.

To lose with beauty or to win as the beast?

Tactics are a fascinating conversation as they separate the fans from the knowledgeable. And tactics, on the biggest stage, tend to make the difference between success and failure. The words of Cryuff are of a man whose beliefs have been rocked. He witnessed a side in Chelsea surrender possession to his beloved Barcelona and who said to Barcelona, “show us what you can do”. He shows his frustration that the beauty of Barca could not overcome the beast of Chelsea.

In 2010 Inter Milan arrived at Camp Nou holding a 3-1 lead from the first leg, they knew that Barcelona needed two goals to qualify. After Motta was sent off after Busquets play acted to a hit to the face, Jose decided that it was going to be a defensive effort from all 10 players on the pitch. In the whole game Inter did not have single shot on goal, yet they didn’t need to; The onus was on Barcelona to break this side down. A hand ball decision at the end of the game prevented Barca from reaching the final, yet what Jose had done was show the football world how to play against Barcelona.

What Chelsea and Inter have shown is that defending is so much more than saying defend deep, be compact. Mourinho's biggest asset is bringing together a group of players and making them one unit, united together. This was Saachi’s achievement at Milan and Guardiola’s at Barca; a sytem and style in which “players are connected to one another, which moves together as if was a single player”, these are the words of the master Sacchi. And he believes that “today few teams know how to do this. Few teams work as a unit. They are all made up of little groups. There is no great connection, nor a good distribution of players around the pitch.”

These words are what make tactics so important, it is not just the formation, the defensive mentality or attacking style. A manager who is able to bring together a group and make them in to one unit, one united team, will have the ability to be successful. This is why Arsenal have failed in the past several years, the lack of a cohesive unit where the whole team works together. They are individual units around the pitch which often do not work together.Sacchi says that “It is not a question of 4-4-2 or 4-2-1-3, it is a question of having a team which is ordered, in which the players are connected to one another, which moves together, as if it was a single player." It is this which made Chelsea victorious in Munich, a collective spirit of togetherness, belief and trust in each other.

When will Chelsea get back to the final?

Personally I cannot see it next season as the side is now in a real stage of transition; the side which was put together by Jose is eventually going to be split up, and it will up to a new manager to start a new era off at Stamford Bridge.  Roman Abramovich desires his Chelsea side to play like Barcelona yet if they had done so against Napoli, Benfica, Barcelona or Bayern then I assure you they would not have got anywhere close to the final. Di Matteo was pragmatic  and he did the way he saw best; in very much the path of the man whose shadow continues to linger over Stamford Bridge, Di Matteo adopted tactics which reflected the strengths and very much the weaknesses of the side. However, perhaps Chelsea do need to move on and adapt their tactics.

You see Cryuff is right in a way. In 2010 Inter defeated Barcelona and overcame Bayern to life the title, it was a display of defensive might and which was seen as perhaps the end of the Barcelona style. Jose had beaten the best side in the world, yet the following season Barcelona were back in the final and winning it again, while Inter have been on a decline ever since that win. Could Chelsea be on that same path now? I wrote before that the final last week was possibly Chelsea's last chance to win that trophy, because their wish to play a certain way may actually be detrimental to the team's success. Look at Arsenal to see what happens when you attempt to change a winning formula! Yet in the long term it is much more beneficial to have the ball and dictate the game, than trust the opposition not to score.

The success and then decline of Inter comes from Mourinho; for all his qualities in motivating and getting the best out of the players he has by playing to their strengths, he does not consider the long term impact of his position; he works only for the present. It serves a purpose, to win, yet it does not give any long term success. This is why Chelsea’s win, which I commend, is a one off. They lack the quality to sustain this kind of success on a regular basis. It is why Cryuff is right when he talks of the problems with the win at all costs mentality. Barcelona are a great example of a side which believes in a way to play, they don’t always win yet they have been continually successful. Their style has been able to permeate through generations and their qualities and superiority have won out eventually over others.

Long term plans required

Realistically Chelsea qualified through aspects of luck and fortune. In almost all their games post Villas-Boas they were saved by the wastefulness of the opposition over their own quality. Of course this is football and this is what happens, yet their tactic, to give the other side the ball and hope they don’t score, could have been seriously flawed. That is in the past now and Chelsea are winners, yet where is Greece after Euro 2004? Where is Inter after 2010? A moment of success which history remembers but which cannot be sustained.

It may have been written in the stars, it may have been destiny. Yet if Chelsea are serious about being one of the top sides in Europe then they need to develop a side which plays better football, which keeps better possession and which attacks with fluency. Their defensive strengths make them a better side than Arsenal and even United right now, yet they need to improve their ability to keep the ball and not concede possession. They need to consider the long term and finally move on from the Jose era.

This will not happen overnight and so Abramovich needs to understand that if he wants to see great football combined with trophies, then he has to be patient and allow his manager to build the foundations in the senior level and importantly in the youth academy. It took Barcelona decades to get where they are, yet they continued their belief in what they did and have become a blueprint of how to develop great players and thus, great sides. Now Roman has his grail, perhaps he can be more patient for the future. Unfortunately I doubt it.

Chelsea’s Date With Destiny

In June 2003 Chelsea’s fortunes would be changed when a Russian billionaire bought the club from Ken Bates and went about seeking to make Chelsea the best side in world football. Chelsea had already qualified for the Champions League and so Roman went about buying up the best talent in world football.

If it wasn’t for a remarkable Arsenal that season Chelsea under Ranieri may well have won their first league title. As it was, Ranieri was deemed not of the calibre required for Chelsea to succeed and the Champions League winning coach Jose Mourinho was the man given the opportunity to take this club to greatness. He unquestionably delivered, two league titles put Chelsea on top in England and for a time it appeared that this side would go on to dominate world football.

However, the problems with foreign ownership was made apparent when Abramovich appeared to take matters into his own hands, the acquisition of Shevchenko, no doubt a top player, yet perhaps not what Mourinho wanted ruffled Mourinho and his lack of control on the club led to the the Special One departing. Yet his legacy has lived on at Stamford Bridge ever since.

The Old Guard - Jose's team

This weekend Chelsea will make their second appearance in a Champions League final, cruelly missing out in 2008 with a slip from John Terry on a match winning penalty. It seems fitting therefore in what is most likely the end of the Jose team which dominated England, they have a chance to win the trophy which has eluded the “Old guard” as they are referred of Cech, Cole, Terry, Lampard, Essien and Drogba. It will be their last chance to win the coveted prize that Roman seeks so much. How ironic that this is perhaps the one season where no one would have expected to see Chelsea anywhere near the Champions League final.

The sacking of Ancelotti was unnecessary and cold, very much of the attitude of a Russian who perhaps focuses too much on the present and forgets about the past and the need for a stable future. Seven managerial appointments in seven years is not the signs of a stable club and although success has come in that time, the side has not been able to evolve. A new manager is not given time to build their side and so must rely on the current lot, this is why it is very much Mourinho’s side which will take the pitch in Munich.

The new era
The arrival of Villas-Boas was supposed to signal a new era for Roman’s Chelsea, a new style, based on that of Barcelona. However, it is not as easy to instil a way of playing that is not natural for the players you have. What Villas-Boas was able to produce at Porto, was not easy to replicate when the current players are used to playing another way, the Mourinho way. Poor results led to confrontation and the departure of AVB became inevitable, Villas-Boas had focused too much on the future, naively believing that a three contract meant job security.

The problem with Chelsea is that “the old guard” wield power, yet they deserve to, they have earned the right to have an opinion, and the truth is that the “replacements” just aren’t good enough.

How have Chelsea got to the final? By playing the tactics of Jose and neglecting the total football approach sought by Roman. A smart man would realise that this squad are built to play a certain way, yet Roman still longs to see the beautiful game at Stamford Bridge. His only concern should be that if he get’s that, he won’t win anything. It would seem he cannot have it both ways.

Why are Barcelona so good at what they do? Because that is their way, each manager seeks to define the philosophy of Michels and Cryuff and so the total football philosophy is ingrained in the soil of Camp Nou and La Masia. This is simply not the case with Chelsea, where Jose built a strong and powerful side capable of dominating games. It is not that they can’t play good football, yet this is not their strength. Barcelona and Guardiola in particular were scared of Chelsea, because in affect they were the antithesis of Barca, one side was small and the other were giants. Drogba and Esien dominated the games in 2008 yet Barca somehow scraped through. It was not a reflection on the game itself and Chelsea really should have gone through that night. I am sure it was Chelsea's dominance which prompted Barca to go and buy Zlatan, yet I am sure they would have taken Drogba, and do not be surprised if they get the Ivorian this summer.

My point is that Chelsea are who they are and play the way they do, they should not seek to change that to emulate another side, as it will ultimately end in failure. I wrote before that Villas-Boas needed to be more Jose andless Pep in order to succeed at Chelsea, yet he failed and Di Matteo has done what is necessary with this side. He has brought back the best in Terry, Lampard and Drogba by playing to their strengths. This is what has got Chelsea to the final and it is this style which will be the key to their success.

Munich problems

The major problem for Chelsea in Munich however will be those who are not available. Ivanovic and Ramires have been arguably Chelsea’s best players this season and since Di Matteo has returned John Terry has been sublime (discounting the Liverpool game). His actions in Camp Nou were unnecessary and his absence may have a major impact on the final. I wonder how well Luiz and Cahill play together? The performance in Naples would indicate not so well, yet that was under AVB and perhaps Di Matteo can get something from them.

It will not be easy, although Bayern lack the unity of other sides in Europe, they have an excellent side, arguably the world’s best keeper, a strong defence, one of the world’s best midfielders in Schweinsteiger and an attack which is one of the best in the world. Can Bosingwa really keep hold of Ribery? Can Mikel track the runs of Kroos? Perhaps Cole can deal with Robben, yet with overlaps from Lahm it will be important the midfielders are tracking runners. Even though away from home Bayern have been poor, and their last game in the German cup against Dortmund was atrocious, at home they have been impressive, the 7-0 defeat of Basel in particular was sublime and Bayern will want to win the trophy in front of their home fans more than anything. Chelsea have a real test on their hands.

What lies ahead?

The last time Cheslea they got the final they were a penalty kick away, at that time the side were at their peak. It is not the same now and this is really the last chance for a lot of these players to go and win the Champions League. The truth is, not winning it will mean only Europa League football next season and I do have to question the future of this side. The Old guard have been derided and mocked as to their abilities this season, yet without them Chelsea would not have had any resurgence and would not have won the FA Cup and be in Munich for the final.

What then afterwards? Drogba appears set to leave and this will be a big game for a player who has personified this Chelsea side for the best part of a decade. His strength, power and skill has been overlooked at times by his flamboyance, antics and petulance, a somewhat fitting metaphor of Roman’s time at Chelsea. Yet he will be difficult to replace. As for Cole, Terry, Lampard and Essien; their careers are coming to an end and Chelsea fans must be worried about replacements like Bertrand, Cahill, Mata and Meireles, are they really worthy replacements? The 4-1 loss to Liverpool could be put down to resting players for the game in Munich, yet what it showed me was that the future of Chelsea is weak and clearly not good enough to challenge the might of Manchester. Will Chelsea be competing for the title upcoming seasons? I have my doubts.

And what about the manager? Is Di Matteo the right man to lead this team and take them forwards in their “transitional” journey, I believe he may be if the ambition is to build a new squad, he has shown he can be successful and Chelsea need to trust someone to take this team forward. A new manager may find themselves in another vicious cycle of trying to balance the old with the new. However, Chelsea may need a Capello or Deschamps to show an intent that Chelsea wish to compete with the elite of Europe.

With the new signings of Marin, De Bruyne and Romeu it would appear that the future of Chelsea is to match the small, technical players of Barcelona. Yet I question how successful this will be, in this squad I do not see the intimidation of the past players, similar to Arsenal were in 2004, a side which seemed so dominant and powerful, is to be replaced by weaker versions. And it appears Chelsea are becoming the new Arsenal, settling for top four instead of challenging for the league.

If Chelsea do not win in the Munich then the hopes of Roman and his plan to dominate Europe will be distinguished there in the Allianz, this is Chelsea’s final chance to win the trophy he covets so highly. Yet it must be done by the old ways of Jose and not with the fantasy of Barcelona.

Drogba is free and offers style Larsson

The crack of Chelsea wants to end his career at Camp Nou and would be willing to negotiate economically.

The only thing that is uncompromising is he wants a two-year contract, but is willing to sign a '1 +1'.

Didier Drogba's environment has been sent to Andoni Zubizarreta and Barça would be willing to be the new Henrik Larsson. The crack of Chelsea wants to end his career at Camp Nou and would be willing to negotiate economically. The only thing that is uncompromising is he wants a two-year contract, although as blindly believe susposibilidades is willing to sign a '1 +1' with a performance clause in the first year through its agent Tierno Gaye Seydi.

Didier has full confidence in their chances though with 34 years of age. Unless the illness he suffered in this early season (had malaria) the Ivory Coast international is in an enviable physical shape and his power is great finisher. He is a man like no other area and was vital in removing the Barça to foot of the Chelsea in the semis of the Champions.

Drogba confessed to a journalist friend who went to Barcelona for the semis of Champions that was impressive Nou Camp, who would love to play alongside Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta.

So far Chelsea has not commented on its continuity and only has a very interesting financial offer from Nicolas Anelka to go play in China's club Shanghai Shenhua.

The option of having a 'killer' of the institution Drogba is to be considered. A profile and does not exist in the current squad.

The Welsh alternative to await the time

Jordi Alba agrees to renew for Valencia, but MD and reported that renewal is a trick. The left back 'che' is aware of interest of Barcelona and also knows that the first name on the list azulgrana for his position is the Welshman Gareth Bale. So Alba will have no problem in continuing in Valencia because it would have a clause that would allow him to go Barça without a transfer exorbitant.

Continues to send signals to finish culé

Gareth Bale week does not pass without sending a message. The Tottenham left-back said Sunday it will leave the London club "if it gets into Champions". It is clear that Bale throws Barça. So Sandro confessed, companion of the Spurs recently, and Bale himself by saying it would be "a dream" that Barça was after him. Also in the Nou Camp like the Welsh. The problem is its price.

Will think more than anyone to leave Bilbao

The priority of the Barça technical reinforcements crack goes through a defensive profile, with Thiago Silva and Javi Martínez at the top of the list. Targeted names, if anyone will think twice to leave his current club that's Javi Martinez, even to come Barça. With a big contract, Athletic and exciting sporting project brought to the San Mamés Navarre will be expensive. (via MD)

Torres and Van Persie dreams of Barça

Cracks like Torres or Van Persie happy to come azulgrana equipment.
With Pep or with Tito, the hook is now the Camp Nou is unmatched.

Barça is coming a new, as yet different. Pep Guardiola will leave the team with worldwide prestige that goes far beyond its 13 degrees and is about to take over his close collaborator Tito Vilanova. This year will not fall or la Liga or the Champions League, but this team captivates like no other in the world. And that power of attraction also affects top-level professionals, such as Fernando Torres and Robin van Persie. Any of them would be happy to wear at the azulgrana in the football project with more punch in the world. And Barça knows it.

In the situation of the Dutch forward has been reporting MD. Arsenal captain, top scorer in the Premier League, has for months without renewing a contract that takes away just one year of operation. That makes it a market opportunity. Friend of Cesc Fabregas, we would be happy to return to play with him and that Barça move tab.

The forward of Chelsea, who beat Barça in the Champions League, also has friends in the Camp Nou. And the way he spoke of Barça seconds after deleting it confirms what level is the degree of admiration culé.

Wenger brings Podolski and he assimilates his escape

According to the initial plan, the lead is not, today, to reinforce the priority line for the club, but the market sometimes gets in the window a great opportunity that would be foolish not to value. Robin van Persie is in a contractual situation so special that it almost becomes a bargain. The top scorer in the Premier League with 28 goals out of contract with Arsenal in 2013, so that is about to enter its final season. The club 'gunner' has failed in its attempts to extend the contract for Van Persie, who now gives long under the guise of the Euro. If Arsenal do not want to see how Van Persie free will in a few months, the opportunity to profit is to pass it this summer, with the handicap that he could not do it the way 'gunner', ie, asking for a morterada. Coach, Arsène Wenger, has already hedged its bets. Yesterday Cologne Arsenal accepted wholesale from Lukas Podolski, a former Bayern forward, for about 13 million euros. Van Persie can not ask for much more.

No one spoke so well of a Barça played

Fernando Torres is recovering a goal and enthusiasm to play the Euro due to its season finale, endorsed with his latest hat trick. This whole course and a crack appeared in disgrace. After his high level in Liverpool, in January 2011 put Chelsea 58 million euros to sign him until 2016. But be that for whatever reason, did not fit. Now, many times from the bench, is giving and scoring goals that have helped Chelsea to be in the Champions League final. Achieved while Barça settled in the European tournament and still at the Camp Nou, released this: "Barça is ahead of all but the best does not always win." No one spoke so well of a new rival eliminated. Further proof that, if for him, would love to play with friends, some of them as intimate as Iniesta. Athletic heart 'El Niño' never go to Real Madrid, but Barça. Recently, he had sold to Chelsea for 20 million euros. If Barça make a gesture, 'El Niño' help. (via MD)

But I do not think Guardiola's decision based on what happened. it may be that Pep had it tied up "

Nadal: "Congratulations to Barcelona, losing wrongfully"

Rafa Nadal acknowledged the superiority of Barça against Chelsea despite yesterday's draw at Camp Nou (2-2) and lamented the eliminacióninación of Guardiola in the semifinals of the Champions League.

"Congratulations to Barça, by the way you play you have and what they have shown. You can lose, yesterday was lost (tied but was eliminated) I think unfairly, but that's football, have won many things in the past and deserves the highest recognition for what they have achieved, "he said at a news conference after his debut with victory in the Trofeo Conde de Godó.

Nadal will tonight's match Real Madrid against Bayern Munich in the hopes that your computer run better luck than the azulgranas.
In this sense, no secret that the interests of his team, the best thing that could happen is that the set of Pep Guardiola has not qualified for the final, because the quality of both sets "is preferable for Real, if passed, play the final against Chelsea rather than against Barça. "

In any case, Nadal recalled that it said yesterday that he wished that the European finals of the Spanish teams have played in full: Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Champions League and the Athletic Club and Atletico Madrid and Valencia's Europa League . (via SPORT)

Rosell: “I’m proud of the attitude of the players, the coaches and the fans”

The Barça President expressed his regret at the defeat but also his pride at the attitude of the players and the fans who: “gave a message of maturity tonight”.

As to Guardiola’s future, the President declared: “we are still confident of renewing his contract . I’m sure that if he’s made his mind up, he’ll let us know when he thinks it’s best”.

Sandro Rosell spoke to reporters just after the defeat to Chelsea and declared: “it’s a real blow. I want to congratulate Chelsea. This hasn’t been a good week for the Club members, but we’ve given a message of maturity tonight. We showed ourselves to be a civilised crowd, who supported the players and the coaches at all times. We lost and that’s part of the game, but we couldn’t ask for any more from the players. I am proud of them and the coaching staff, but especially of the fans who have shown that they are the best in the world”.

Rosell continued: “the team has shown character and a desire to win the tie. It’s a game and tonight we didn’t have the luck we needed. We had many more chances than they did, but they beat us”. The President had earlier gone down to the changing rooms to speak to the players: “I wanted to shake their hands and congratulate them on their attitude and the great image they showed the whole world. I guess that like all Barça fans I was confident we would get through, but when we got into the last quarter of an hour, you could see it was really hard for us - the ball just didn’t want to go in, we’ve simply got to accept that”.

Rosell was asked about Leo Messi and he was quick to make it clear that: “Messi has already given us so much – there’s no more to say. He’s still the best player in the world and we are very lucky to have him here with us. He was unlucky with the penalty. Our opponents know he’s the best and they put two or three players onto him”.

Guardiola announced that he would be meeting with Rosell to clarify his future and the President reiterated the board’s desire for him to continue at the Club: “we are still confident of renewing his contract . I’m sure that if he’s made his mind up, he’ll let us know when he thinks it’s best. We are all confident that the group will stay together and that next year we’ll be in with a good chance again to win all the competitions at this stage of the season. Right now, we need to deal with the defeat – there will be time to talk about the future”. (via FCBarcelona.com)

Joan Gaspart believes that Pep has to continue because now, as "captain" can not abandon "their boat.".

46 shots to 12 over both legs

Over the two legs, Barça won out in terms of possession, completed passes, shots and corners, as well as in many other aspects.

Xavi Hernández made more passes during the Camp Nou game than all the Chelsea players combined.

It’s sure to be a long time before there’s another tie like the one Barça ended up losing against the Londoners. The stats from the two legs show an enormous difference between the two teams - with the only stat that really counts of course – the goals – favouring Chelsea. Di Matteo’s team scored three times from four chances over the 180 minutes, whilst Barça scored twice from 11 chances on target. The total number of shots made by both teams was 46 from Barça (24 in London and 22 in the second leg) and just 12 from Chelsea (5 and 7).

The possession stats tell a similar story, with Barça enjoying 73% over both matches, completing 1,537 passes (782 in the first leg and 755 in the second), which was nearly five times more than Chelsea’s 329 (194 and135). In the end though, that just wasn’t enough – and neither was the corner count: 18 against 2 over the whole tie.

There’s no better example of Barça’s impotence than the number of passes Xavi managed to complete - a total of 295 - just 34 less than the whole Chelsea team – even though he sat out the last few minutes at Stamford Bridge when the team were laying siege to the Chelsea goal. On Tuesday, Xavi completed 168 passes, against the 135 that Chelsea made.

One more astonishing stat that shows just what an amazing tie this was: Chelsea’s three goals all came in injury time – in the first half at Stamford Bridge and in both halves at the Camp Nou. (via FCBarcelona.com)

The 'antifootball' reached the final of the Champions

The international press echoes the elimination of Barça but ignore the "catenaccio" with which Chelsea have faced the 180 minutes of qualifying.

The international sports media opens this morning editions of the "surprise" elimination of Barça at the hands of Chelsea. It seems that few believed in the English, which eventually will be in Munich, even though the classification have questioned the approach and methods used to access the final giving up completely on the ball throughout the round.

BEYOND THE DEFEAT IN ARGENTINA

The daily 'Olé' is the most explicit in his home titration "Celebrate the antifútbol" with a picture of Messi disappointed. The Argentine newspaper notes that Barça "had the ball but not always knew how to use" and noted that "Chelsea played it all behind." However, extols career azulgrana and states that "the Barça game is bigger than a bad result."

IN ITALY RECALL THE CATENACCIO

The 'Gazzetta dello Sport' and 'Corriere dello Sport also echo the macho Chelsea at the Camp Nou having Messi as the protagonist. However, the very 'Gazzetta dello Sport says that Chelsea wins the final thanks "to Di Mateo catenaccio", referring to the coach's tactical approach' blue '. Also the 'Corriere dello Sport described as surprise and Chelsea classification refers to the method of Di Matteo defense to neutralize the azulgranas as "the reinvention of catenaccio".

MARCA ALSO condemns "ANTIFÚTBOL"

The Spanish sports press also opens its portals to the elimination azulgrana. The daily Marca said that "Barça star with the antifútbol" and sees "incredible" a pass from Chelsea. For its part, 'As' said the failure of Messi for the penalty and called "Messi prods the dream final." (via SPORT)

The Azulgrana midfielder thanked the fans for their support and he said that tonight’s defeat was “a hard blow” for the players.

Cesc advised his teammates to look forward and to think about the “last four games of the Liga and the final of the King’s Cup”.

The FC Barcelona players are disappointed that they didn’t make it to the Champions League final. “It’s a painful way to go out because we were superior. The result in Stamford Bridge is what did us in,” said Cesc Fàbregas after the match. When Barça went up 2-0 the team had its sights set on Munich, however Chelsea scored two goals from two chances and killed off the tie. The Azulgrana midfielder said that “we played a great game, we dominated and we created a lot of chances. We didn’t sacrifice our style.”

“It’s painful to be eliminated this way, seeing that we had a lot of chances to score,” said a very up-front Cesc, who added “it’s a very hard blow.” The midfielder, however, reassured hit teammates and Barça fans that “we have to hold our heads high” and that next year “we’ll have the chance to do important things.” He added that the players have shown “that they can better themselves.”

The players must look forward and think about “the last four games in La Liga and the King’s Cup final.” Fàbregas said that it’s too early to make a judgement on his team’s season and that “we have to keep looking forward. We have to react quickly, even if it’s only for our fans.”

Despite the defeat, the midfielder congratulated the supporters for their amazing attitude and for cheering on the team. “I’ve never seen the Camp Nou like that after a defeat,” said Cesc. He added that Barça “are a big team” because it has incredible “players, managers and fans.”

Here are the statements made by the some of the players on Twitter after the match:

Guardiola: “This year it wasn't to be”

Pep Guardiola, disappointed with his team’s elimination, indicated that Barça played two fantastic matches against Chelsea.

The manager thanked the supporters and his players for their dedication.

“It wasn’t meant to be this year. The first thing that goes through my head is immense sorrow. Forgive me if I’m not clairvoyant, but I have the perception that with time I’ll say: ‘we played an excellent tie.’” Josep Guardiola analyzed the two-leg tie against Chelsea with his heart and and head: “we played exceptionally well for 180 minutes, we did everything we could to be in the final. We’ve never worked this hard to be in a final.”

He added: “we have to know what we did incorrectly and correct it.” The Barça manager analyzed the moments after his team took a two-goal lead: “with the 2-0 we didn’t stop, we kept on attacking. No one can have everything. It can be a lesson that you learn with time.”

Guardiola, who congratulated Chelsea “for their defensive work” and for their spot in the final, was clear and honest: “we failed because we didn’t score [more goals]. However, we worked very hard to be here.” According to the manager, “the important thing is that we made it here and we were once again very, very close.”

He also highlighted a couple of key aspects of tonight’s match: “the 2-1 wasn’t good for us psychologically. We went out in the second half, we had a penalty, and they were reinforced.” He added with resignation: “we saw a repeat of the same story in Lodon, they scored in the 45+1 minute.”

Guardiola especially wanted to thank the fans for their support. “The fans, simply spectacular. They carried us and I’m very thankful to them. They also saw that we gave it our all. Perhaps we have changed their mentality but we have to win once again,” said the manager while trying to hide his disappointment with a smile. Guardiola also acknowledged Leo Messi in a very public way: “I want to thank him for everything he’s done, my admiration for him is insurmountable. He’s an example to us all on how to be better each day.”

Barça now have four games left in La Liga and the final of the Cup. Pep Guardiola explained how he plans to keep his men motivated: “we have to value the emotional aspect of the players and see how we can recover them.”

Meeting with Rosell

When asked if he will continue to manage the team next season, Guardiola said: “I’ll meet with President Sandro Rosell in the coming days and we’ll decide in what’s best. Obviously, it’s time to talk about it.”(via FCBarcelona.com)

Rosell: "We are proud of this team"

FC Barcelona president, Sandro Rosell, encouraged everyone to get up after the blow against Chelsea.

The Barcelona president was sad, like all culés fans at that moment, but praised the attitude of Barça in times as tough as this: "I am very proud of our players, our coach and especially a hobby that has to the end and lively as ever. "

"This is football. We have tried here and there but could not be. We will continue with this style of game, you can not ask for more," said Rosell.

It has been a field dominated qualifying for the club but with a lot of bad luck, as the president recalled: "Football is not just in this tie but always won the best playing, Barça would always win. Chelsea has done their game, has come to defend the area. We look forward to this final in Munich but has not been ".

Rosell's message is constructive in a few moments where the disappointment pervades all the fans. "We're not happy but proud. Now we have to think about the final in Madrid. Not forget that we have won three titles this season and we can still win a fourth, so that the season would be good. There is no other to get up and quedarons with the maturity of this team and this hobby, "he said.

Finally, Sandro Rosell expected to give Guardiola yes to continuity, "We remain confident that Pep renewed. I am convinced that what happened today will not influence and that he will tell in due course, but that's not what today you are interested in FC Barcelona. El culé has to be proud of this team, demonstrating not only that knows how to win but also knows how to lose. " (via SPORT)
